On a rainy morning I got to school early in order to get
online. As I approached, I noticed that the usual office people were milling
about outside. Then I noticed that the huge door was still shut and locked. An
elegantly dressed elderly gentleman provided me with a running commentary, in
impeccable Italian. “It’s raining you see, “ he said. “And so the school is
locked when it rains?” I ask. “No,” he chuckles. “It’s October and it starts
raining a lot more in October”. I wonder why he is telling me this and I still
can’t see the relation between rain and the door. Lapo, the Assistant Director
of the school, is looking up and down the street. The elegant man keeps talking
about the rain and how we need it, it is part of the cycle. Then he throws in
that Lapo has forgotten his keys at home. And now he is looking for the person
who usually comes in after him who definitely has keys. Still no one with keys
shows up and Lapo slowly heads farther up the street searching and disappears
around the corner. The gentleman keeps talking about rain and keys, keys and
rain. Then a good while later, Lapo comes back with the key man. He found him
in the Caffe up the street and so they had a coffee together. Did I mention it
was raining?
Classic! Very cute story, and fits with all I know (or rather all I THINK I know) about Italy. Got a problem? Don't worry, take a break, have a latté, everything will work itself out :-) Oh except maybe that national economy thing...... :-) Keep studying, bye for now! Catriona
